International Optimist Dinghy (IOD) - Opti Class

Opti Class

The Opti class is designed for novice, intermediate and advanced sailors ages 6-12 (depending on size). Students have all completed/graduated Learn 2 Sail course. Students typically own their own Opti but OLSS has some available for use. Students in Opti are taught to sail in numerous locations on the lake in various conditions.

More novice students will become proficient in any destination sailing. Additionally, students are introduced to sailboat racing and rigging. Students will learn how to navigate a race course successfully. Okauchee Lake Yacht Club (OLYC) races and beginner regattas are explored/encouraged.

The more experienced Opti sailors will be taught more on competition and advanced aspects of sailboat racing. This incudes wind awareness, advanced rigging, speed, handling, tactics and strategy. Students will learn how to finish a race course at the front of the fleet. Okauchee Lake Yacht Club (OLYC) races are encouraged and  numerous regional regattas are supported.
